PERFORMANCE (ROCHESTER)

Rochester Academy of Medicine
1441 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14610
3:30 PM pre-concert chat, 4PM CONCERT

$20 General

Family Max $40 and Pay What You Can Tickets sold at concert

Join us to experience the storytelling power of multi-instrumentalist/composer Emily Pinkerton with “Enduring Stories: ghost, murdery, & lost voices of the Appalachians and Catskills” (Spring 2025). In “Ephemera Ballads” - another NYSCA funded new work - Emily Pinkerton shares stories of two women whose important messages about class, gender and bodily autonomy resonate today, as well as her earlier work “Rounder Songs.” Emily will also be playing solo banjo pieces.

As part of this program, Flower City Arts offers two special printmaking workshops. Emily’s new piece, "Ephemera Ballads" draws inspiration from song texts of folk poets from the 19th century. The workshops teach participants about 19th century letterpress techniques, giving a hands-on experience with the moveable type, inks and machines that New York printers used to mass produce the song texts that inspired Emily in her new work.

Coffee Connection will be selling coffee and baked goods during intermission. The Coffee Connection creates jobs and trains women for sustainable employment as a not-for-profit business selling fair trade, organically-grown, and sustainably-farmed coffee to retail and wholesale customers.

Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas

Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas

Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas featuring composer Roberto Sierra

Rochester, N.Y.--“Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas" features performances from chamber ensemble fivebyfive as well as musicians from Society for New Music (SNM), with each group hosting a concert in their respective home city.  The program focuses on Latin American themes but also explores the profound connections and mutual understanding that our stories can create between us.

fivebyfive is a Rochester, N.Y based chamber ensemble featuring flute, clarinet, electric guitar, bass, and piano. SNM provides opportunities for musicians in Central New York to showcase their talent while performing concerts that feature new compositions.

Anchoring the “Fantastical Stories/Historias Fantásticas" program is a new NYSCA-funded work by Roberto Sierra of Ithaca, N.Y.  With a Support for Artists grant, fivebyfive commissioned the Grammy-nominated and Latin Grammy winner to produce “Sonidos del Tlön”.  Sierra uses the magic realism found in a short story by 20th-century Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges as inspiration. Exploring fantasy and reality is a common theme in Latin American literature. Many creators use this oppositional device to make sense of a fraught present and uncertain future.

“Sierra does an extraordinary job of taking us into a musical twilight zone.  Even he says some of his music is absurd— like mimicking the screech of a bird--but he wants to experiment with sound. I think listeners will definitely find this fantastical,” proclaimed Laura Lentz, fivebyfive’s Artistic Director.

Sierra will attend both concerts and headline the pre-concert chats that occur 30 minutes prior to the start of each program. Other music presented will include works by Clarice Assad, Miguel del Aguila, Gabriela Lena Frank, inti figgis-vizueta, and Angélica Negrón.

Intertwined with the musical pieces will be an original presentation by Rochester poet, Henry I Padrón-Morales. During the intermission of the Rochester concert, professional baker Ingrid Gonzalez will provide Latin American pastries through her business Simply Delicious Treats. Coffee Connection, a social enterprise that sells fair-trade, organic, sustainably farmed coffee, will offer individual servings and bagged coffee from Latin America as well.

Additionally, a collaborative experience called, “Create Your Own Fantastical Story”, will take place on Sunday September 29, 2024, at 2pm.  Author Maria Brandt conducts an hour-long workshop for all ages at Writers & Books located at 740 University Avenue, Rochester, New York. Members of fivebyfive will be present to offer their stories.

“We hope participants will want to share what they write when they attend the concert the weekend after the workshop,” said Laura Lentz, Artistic Director of fivebyfive.  “Our goal is to make every concert experience transformative and give our audiences an opportunity for their own artistic expression.”

Create Your Own Fantastical Stories (with author Maria Brandt)

A bird streaked across the misty sky and, absently, I turned it into an airplane….
“The Garden of Forking Paths,” by Jorge Luis Borges

In preparation for the premiere of Roberto Sierra’s new work which takes inspiration from the fiction of Jorge Luis Borges, this workshop will introduce audience members to the wonders of magical realism. We’ll begin by sharing thoughts about what it means to conjure magic into our everyday worlds. What kinds of magic? And to what ends? Then, participants will be given space to create their own fictions, emerging with a poem or story or image that captures the radical power of magic to help all of us understand our true selves better. Participants will have the option of sharing their work with fivebyfive’s October 6 audience.

Sunday October 22, 2023, 3PM
Pre-concert talk at 2:30PM
Temple Beth El Synagogue
139 S. Winton Road
Rochester, NY

fivebyfive’s 2023-2024 season, “Dichotomies,” will begin with its program Old & New: Sephardic Reflections in collaboration with Pegasus Early Music/NYS Baroque and artist Lynne Feldman.

Sephardic music has its roots in the musical traditions of the Jewish communities in medieval Spain and medieval Portugal. Programs will be presented at Temple Beth El in Rochester, with other performances in the Western NY/Finger Lakes region.

Music includes a new version of Brazilian composer Clarice Assad’s Sephardic Suite written by Ondrej Veselý (directly) for fivebyfive, and a new setting of three Sephardic songs by Eastman graduate Keane Southard.

The two ensembles, fivebyfive and Pegasus Early Music/NYS Baroque, will treat audiences to “old” and “new” versions of the sephardic tunes featured in the concert, with artist Lynne Feldman’s original tapestries celebrating Jewish life shared as part of the performance.

Pegasus Early Music/NYS Baroque specialize in music from previous centuries, using research and early instruments to bring this rich music back to life. In this concert, they will perform settings of some of the same Sephardic tunes as fivebyfive, basing their performance on medieval musical style, oral tradition, and improvisation. They will use instrumentation that includes recorders, duduk, percussion, harp, and lute, for a variety of musical sounds. Soprano Nell Snaidas, who is well-known for her work in early Sephardic music, will join the ensemble.

We will also have a traveling version of this program with just fivebyfive.
